PARAMOUNT.COM recently caught up with Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan of CHARMED at the celebration for the 150th episode and 1st season DVD release. We asked them to discuss the show and how both their characters and lives have evolved over the past seven seasons:
PARAMOUNT: Tell me about the transition between the first season up until now, how has the show evolved?
ALYSSA: More than anything we have all evolved as human beings, and grown up. Your twenties are spent trying to figure out who you are and what you believe in, and your thirties are about sort of basking in that revelation. I think the characters have done the same thing. PARAMOUNT: What is it about the chemistry of the three sisters that you think has caused the show to be so successful?
ALYSSA: I have to give that to casting. They just did a really good job finding three girls that were similar enough and different enough to make it interesting.
PARAMOUNT: Holly, how has Piper evolved over the past seven seasons? Have you enjoyed playing her as she's evolved?
HOLLY: My character has progressed into a whole new person. Just like normal people on a day-to-day basis change and go through life's changes, characters do, too. I don't think you should get in the rut of playing the same character every day because no person is the same every day.
PARAMOUNT: And, a big change to you personally — how has having a baby changed your life?
HOLLY: It has changed just about everything about my life. I think anybody who has had a baby, it does definitely put everything into perspective. Things that were so important to you mean absolutely nothing. And the status of his diaper means absolutely everything.
PARAMOUNT: Do the other girls feel like Aunties?
HOLLY: I am sure they do. You saw them fighting over who is going to hold him. Somehow he always comes back to me with lipstick all over him. They take him into the makeup room and do bad things to his hair. They gave him a Mohawk the other day. I can't let him out of my sight for very long.
PARAMOUNT: Rose, how has CHARMED changed your life besides the fame?
ROSE: It has made me feel old before my time. (Laughs) It has probably caused more personal growth than I would have thought. I was an extremely undisciplined person. If I didn't like something, I would move. If I didn't like a city, I would leave. Having to work without those parameters... I suppose it is more adult.
PARAMOUNT: Do you have a favorite episode?
ROSE: I do. The noir episode which we did not too long ago is absolutely my favorite. We had a great director, and a great script. We had Joe Kennedy Sr.'s limousines in which he used to have affairs with Gloria Swanson in the backseat, and things like that. It was great being shot in black and white.
PARAMOUNT: Holly, how do you want your relationship with Leo to evolve?
HOLLY: That relationship has been so complicated and so involved, I can't say that I can relate to it myself, so I can't really think of an outcome. But now that the audience and our fan base very, very much wants Piper and Leo to be together, depending on how long we have with the show, we will map out that relationship. Accordingly, I think we deserve to give the audience what it wants.
PARAMOUNT: Is there anything specifically you can point to that has carried the success of the show?
ALYSSA: The show has been successful because of the relationship between the family. Before anything, we are a family show... about three sisters that are trying to make their lives work... with magical powers not an easy task.
PARAMOUNT: Did you imagine that CHARMED would be on the air this long?
ALYSSA: I knew just watching the pilot that it was going to be hugely successful. I do not think you ever imagine seven years but you know we have been very blessed to have an amazing fan base.
HOLLY: It surprises me everyday that the show has had such a long life, but if it ended tomorrow, I would be just as surprised. CHARMED has been part of my life for so long. I have gone through so many changes — on the show, I met my husband, I had a baby, it was the major part of my 20s.
PARAMOUNT: Alyssa — Your relationship working with Holly and Rose — how has that been part of the formula for the success as well?
ALYSSA: Yeah, it is just so much fun — you see that in our work and the crazy situations that we are thrown in to. We are so blessed just to be able to come to work and do what we do.
PARAMOUNT: Where do you see the show going creatively?
ALYSSA: The great thing with CHARMED is that creatively there are no boundaries. We can go twelve years if they want us and never run out of ideas. I think we are just happy to ride the wave and whatever happens, happens. We have had such a great success behind us that if it ended tomorrow we would feel sufficient and complete, I also think we can keep going if they want us. It is a nice place to be at.
PARAMOUNT: Thanks for talking with us today.
